Unit of Research, Development and Commercialization (URDC) is affiliated under Institute of Research, Development and Commerciialization (IRDC), UiTM, Shah Alam. Before 2004 this unit was known as Unit of Research, Development and Commersialisation (URC). URDC is set up to encourage and facilitate research as well as protection and commercialization of intellectual property. The unit organizes training programme in basic research and coordinate internal resources to support research activities. URDC has been established in the Sabah Campus since 1994.

The unit organizes joint programmes on specialized fields with departments or faculties within UiTM. It also collaborates with other universities or research institutes, government agencies and private sectors on areas of strategic interests.


  • To provide facilities and equipments for research activities.
  • To organize training programmes on research methodology.
  • To provide small research grants.
  • To evaluate and support research proposals for the purpose of grant application.
  • To liase with IRDC.


To become an effective and competent unit which aims at maintaining and bringing to greater heights the culture of doing research, consultation and commersialiation among the academic staff of UiTM Sabah Campus for the progress of the University, state and country.


To encourage the academic staff of UiTM Sabah Campus to get involve in research, consultation expertise and contribute towards commercialization so that the culture of learning can continue and established in UiTM Sabah Campus.


  • To increase the number of academic staff involved in research, consultation and comercialization.
  • To promote quality and continuous research of world-class standards.
  • To manage, coordinate and provide necessary services for successful research, consultancy and projects for commercialization.
  • To disseminate information and provide training on research, consultancy, intellectual property and commercialization.
  • To work hand in hand with UiLC to encourage academic staff to use their expertise and ability to generate networking.

Client Charter

  • To organize seminars/courses/workshops and so on pertaining to research, consultation and commersialiation at least ones a year
  • To make known to all academic staff the opportunities available in the field of research, consultation and commersialiation at least a week after receiving information about them.
  • To become a mediator between UiTM academic staff and outside agencies to accopmplish projects on research, consultation and commersialiation.
  • To set-up an evaluating team that would estimate the cost of research project.
  • To check on works being carried out on research, consultation and commercialization by UiTM academic staff done on by at least ones in every 3 months.

This unit is headed by a coordinator who is elected on a contract basis by the Vice Chancellor (Academic Affairs) from time to time. Since 1994 to 2006, nine coordinators have served this post as shown below:

To become a centre of academic publication that is highly regarded in the region of Borneo.


To publish referred writings in the form of articles, monographs, books, edited books or journals produced by the lecturers of UiTM Sabah and its other academic staffs.


To increase the number of referred publication in UiTM Sabah.. 

Client Charter

UPENA of UiTM Sabah pledges to;

  • Come up with at least two (2) referred publication every year.
  • Complete the editing work and referral within six (6) months from the date of receiving the manuscript.
  • Publish the manuscript that had already been edited and referred within (1) month.
  • Organises activities such as writing for specific purposes, desktop publishing, indexing, and translation courses.
  • To hand over work that has been published to the writers and the people concerned with marketing within two (2) weeks.

UPENA Activities

  • To coordinate all activities pertaining to academic publication in UiTM Sabah.
  • To control and keep tabs on all academic publication in UiTM Sabah
  • To authorize printing for all academic publication in UiTM Sabah.
  • To publish referred writing for specific purposes and desktop publishing from time to time.
  • To carry out publication in the form of digests, bulletins at the level of programs as a starting point for new lecturers to get involve in publication.
  • To publish students’ abstract for their project papers.
  • To publish lecturers’ proceedings and abstract.
  • To organise workshops/ courses pertaining to writing and publication.
  • To organize talks/ seminars for the purpose of publication.
  • To carry out editing work for works produced by the University.
  • To carry out referral work for works produced by the University.
  • To ensure that the writing produced follow a recognized convention set by the University.
  • To produce speeches that are of quality for the management of UiTM.
  • To endeavor towards producing referred journals in the field of social science and science in general.
  • To accept and process manuscripts that have been submitted to the University Publication Unit in the form of monographs, books of authentic version and books of abridged version.
  • To process articles submitted for publication in the referred form to the University.
  • To process articles to be published in the form of digests, bulletins and so on in the University.
